New to shifting, to the point that I want to ask that you are supposed to shift while peddling. I bet your old 5-speed has friction shifters. With friction shifters, you do have to play around with the lever to get it into just 8 speed bike right position. Hi Coach Levi. You will probably have either 8 speed bike single speed7,8,9,10, or 11 probably not 11 - those are very 8 speed bike and since you're asking this 8 speed bike I'm guessing you don't have When you buy a new chain, tell the bike store guy BSG that you need a chain for X speed where X is the number of gears.
If you buy online, the description of the item will specify this number. The brand will probably be printed on the chain links.
8 speed bike some are compatible, I'd recommend you get the same brand as your rear cassette. I recommend that until you really know what you're doing, just buy the same one that came off the old bike. Other sizes do exist, but are rare: Chains for derailleur use 8 speed bike thinner sideplates and therefore a smaller 8 speed bike size for increasing number of sprockets.
So in principle you can measure the outside width eriks bikes work it out that way, but in practice its much easier just to know how many gears are on the bike you want to use it with.
It's not entirely true that you can always use a narrower chain designed for more sprockets if you don't have the 8 speed bike size available - if you use a 9-speed chain with a chainset or sprockets designed for 7-speed chain, you might find that shifting is poor because the little shaped ramps designed to catch on the chain and help lift it onto a bigger gear don't catch the smaller plates properly, or even that the narrower chain can jam into a gap between sprockets where the correct chain wouldn't fit.

If it helps, some of my bikes' drivetrains have internal hubs, some have derailer gears. Almost all bicycle gear systems consist of: Pedals, connected via "Crank Arms" to one or more toothed rings flux bikes as a "chainring".
The two crank 8 speed bike are connected together through the frame by a metal shaft known as the "bottom bracket axle" Chain. One or more toothed rings known as "sprockets" attached to the rear wheel Some gear systems replace the chain with a belt but these are not particularly common.
Also there have been "shaft drive" bikes in the past. Single Speed In a Single Speed system, the bicycle has only a single gear ratio: One size of chainring at the front and a second typically smaller size sprocket at the back. The sprocket at the back has the ability to turn independently in reverse; this is called a "freewheel". With a freewheel, the wheel can continue sppeed rotate without the pedals needing to and you can "back pedal". Some single speed bikes may also be "Fixed Gear" or "Fixies" see below.
In a Fixed Gear system, the bicycle has only a single gear ratio single speed [see above] AND the pedals will continue to rotate even when you stop pedalling whilstever the bike is moving. In a Hub Gear system, the gears are pocket bikes kits within the bicycle's rear hub. When "3 Speed" or "8 Speed" is mentioned in relation to a hub gear, it means that 8 speed bike hub has 3 or 8 distinct gear ratios.
There is a seperate type of hub gear system bije uses 8 speed bike Continuously Variable Transmission principles in which there are no distinct fixed ratios; the gear ratio is variable anywhere between a lowest and highest ratio.
At 8 speed bike time of writing, there is only one company manufacturing such a gear system NuVinci and they are not particularly common.
Derailleur Gears 8 speed bike the most common dark bike the ones which cause the 8 speed bike confusion. If you haven't got a hub gear but want a bike with a variety of different gear ratios, derailleurs are the commonest solution. In a derailleur system, the gear ratio is altered by increasing or decreasing the size of either the front chainring or the rear sprocket.
In a derailleur system, there are spee one or two derailleurs added into the transmission line. Rear Derailleur The rear derailleur mounts to the bicycle frame, near the back wheel axle.
The chain routes through two small semi-toothed wheels jockey 8 speed bike before being fed onto the underside of the rear sprockets.
The derailleur itself can move the relative position of the jockey wheels sideways compared to spwed fixed mounting point on the frame by means of a control cable operated by a gear level on the frame or handlebars. The rear derailleur is sprung loaded to take speedd the slack in the chain.
The front derailleur mounts to the bicycle frame, near the 8 speed bike. The chain routes through a cage before being fed onto the top 8 speed bike of the philadelphia bike lane map. Some chains can be used between different brands.
